About

Welcome to Two Steps Far

megan and ITwo Steps Far  is dedicated to providing comprehensive guides to major cites and destinations with an emphasis on, but not limited to child-friendly and family-focused travel.

TSF has gone though several iterations since late 2004 when we got married, moved to Italy and set up a blog initally called The Union so our friends and family could follow along with our studies in Rome and travels in Europe. It was the days before social media when the term blog had just been coined. Megan still vividly remembers earlier that year when a college professor wrote “blawg” on the white board and asked the class if anyone know what that word meant. Times have certainly changed and blogging has probably long since peaked but rather than romanticize tales of our own trips, we have relaunced the website with map focused travel guides curated for family travels and group tours for families who wish to enrich their children’ s education through travel. Traveling is a finite experience so finding the best of the best is important to us. Sometimes that means a 5 star luxury hotel with top notch service and others it means roughing it at a run down campsite with incredible views. It always means top quality food, fresh – farm to table and organic is our aim and handmade local shopping.

Origins of Two Steps Far

Two Steps Far has existed in some form since 2004. Early to the scene with travel blogging, it started as a way to communicate with family and friends when we were newlyweds studying in Rome and susequent European travels. The name itself was stolen from a catch phrase used by a teacher we had during our semster abroad in Rome. She taught us about the art of Renaissance by weaving us aroudn the city to show us works of art first hand. Our classes were walking tours of the city and the teachers our guides. With her thick Italian accent she would say things that didn’t quite translate like “I want to make you see…” and always promising the next work of art was only “two steps far.” We trailed behind giggling about these phrases and somewhere later on the website was christened. These memories and this time we spent as newlyweds

Looking back this was a very fomative and happy time in our lives. It was the first time we really left home, we had a real send of freedom, sutonomy and responsibility to ourselves. It strectched and challenged us and truly ushered us into adulthood. These three words will always remind us of our first and greatest adventure and has come to define our philosophy and approach to life where our next adventure can only be two steps far.

With this philosophy we will continue to strive to travel the world, try new things, and shake things up. Traveling with kids while running a demanding buisness at home certainly doesnt make things easy, but we never seem to regret the trips we have taken and the sacrifices made. Family memories shine brighter. ven though it is not always easy, we are working toward living this way all the time. Doing the things we love like traveling, learning new things like gardening or sailing.  Breaking routine with activities out of our ‘comfort zone’ and out of the ordinary give us the kind of unique experiences that enable us make memories that we will cherish for a lifetime. We try to approach our time now in terms of the kind of grandparents we want to be many years from now. Hopefully really cool ones with interesting stories to tell, so many that we never have to tell the same one twice.

Who We Are

When traveling abroad people often ask where we are from and the answer is almost alyways “California.” Pressed further we will proudly answer Laguna Beach, what we consider to be the best place to live in the world. It has the best of everyhting we love: wonderful weather year round, a walkable small town in close proximity the comforts of urban life but immersed in the natural beauty that the beautiful beach coves and panoramic hiking trails that are two steps from our door. If you are wondering how to plan out a trip to this magical place you can of couse check out our guide to Laguna Beach.

As much as our family of 4 loves home, our goal is to be gone for 3 months out of the year. This is the balance that makes us the most happy and we have found an annual formual that seems to strike that balance with one of each: a ski trip, a beach vacation, a trip to Europe and one adventure. In between our larger trips we often take off camping locally on in the western side of the US in our Sprinter van conversion.

We are a family continually rethinking and reevaluating how we educate our children, but traveling has always been intregal as our own education acceleraed when immersed in travel. Our children, ages 8 and 12, do not attend traditional schooling, instead we impliment an ecclectic and ever changing curation of classes, lessons and tutoring that fit under the homeschool umbrella label, although the changing environment helps to honor their learning styles and taste many different flavors of lif outside the artifical walls of a classroom. This is Megan’s domain and we are certainly a family with old fashioned roles.

As with anything else in life, living unconventionally and forging new paths is never the easiest route. There are certainly challenges at every step of the way. Bryan is very much tied to answering the demands of running his marketing agency Strikepoint Media which is based in Laguna Beach. Summers in Europe, don’t necessarily mean 5 week vacations in Euorpe. But rather maximizing time zones, whereas we will spend the day as a family and come 5 pm, Bryan hops on calls and gets to work as the day starts on the West Coast until around midnight.

Always looking two steps ahead to the next trip, and two steps behind remembering the highlights of bygone years, tryign to take each day, step by two steps far.
